Bianca Gardner

Vanderbilt University

My Story

Vanderbilt University has made college very affordable for me, especially when it comes to tuition and housing. However, I still have personal circumstances that make each semester a bit rough when it comes to finances. Most importantly, my mother has some recent medical bills from hypertension issues that we’ve had to worry about. In addition, my father has student loans – paired with a low-income job, this has caused my family to have to work to make ends meet most of the time. As a result, I work about 15 hours a week to support my financial and personal needs. However, the start of each semester is the hardest time because of sudden expenses. Paying for textbooks is hardest for me, and this puts a strain on these initial months. I was hoping to participate in a service trip for spring break either with Habitat of Humanity or Alternative Spring Break, and I would greatly appreciate support for one of these programs.
