My Story
When I look at myself, I realize there has to be a force out there I am still alive and embarking on this opportunity of a lifetime. My mother’s pregnancy was highly complicated. Genetically, every first male child in my mother’s family would die due to calcium deficiency and at an early age I was living this nightmare in my mother’s womb. The doctor had to make a quick decision, either I would die or my mother would die. There was no possible way my mother and I would be living today. However, my mother risked her life to keep me alive and I am proud to say ever since that day it has made me the man I am today. As an inner-city boy born and raised in an impoverished community, I was exposed to a variety of drug and violence. For this reason, I feel it is my responsibility to make a difference in my community even though statistics prove a young black man in my community will never make it to college let alone become a medical doctor. My mother has been an extraordinary influence in my life and she has taught me that it does not matter where you come from, the color of your skin, or what ethnicity group you reside in, education is the key that can open any doors as long as you put your mind to it, stay out of trouble and work hard. It is my desire and goal to persuade and help young men in my city that they can be whoever they want to be as long as they put their mind and heart into it. When I realize many of my friends who are not with me today made the decisions they made, it was because they did not have anything to live for nor had a role model to care and show them the purpose of living. Every time I go home, I am repeatedly reminded that this education is not about me. I have witnessed the effects of institutional anchors on one’s development, and I have made it a life mission to afford others justice, equality and opportunity for success as I have come to experience it. When many people think of my hometown, they automatically assume the luxurious lifestyle this city has to offer, but many people are not exposed to the poverty and depleted neighborhoods some residents are left to live in. With my goals of becoming a physician. I have been honored to conduct research in New York City however, the cost of living is extremely expensive. The issue of money has hindered my excitement for my research goals, as it is a very serious barrier between me and all of these amazing possibilities. As the son of low-working-class immigrants, who was raised in a single-parent household, I understand that I am an immensely privileged individual with a heavy social responsibility. Any monetary funds would not only afford me the ability to responsibly engage with the world, but also to take charge of my education in a new and excited way, and also reassert that I am a mind worthy of investing in and help mold me into not just an American citizen, but also a global citizen determined to bring global successes and solutions to local problems and challenges.
